Boost rolls onto screens in Montreal

The Montreal-set, English-language feature hails from the team behind Oscar-winner The Lady in Number 6.

Two of the producers behind the Academy Award-winning short documentary The Lady in Number 6 are set to release a new feature film.

Bunbury Films’ Frederic Bohbot and Havelock Films’ Kieran Crilly have teamed up on Boost, a Montreal-set English-language action flick, written and directed by Darren Curtis (Yidlife Crisis).

Boost, which is being distributed by Filmoption International, is set to debut today (April 7) on six screens in Montreal at Cineplex and Guzzo theatres, with the movie screening in English and dubbed in French. It will then be rolled out in Quebec City, Toronto and Vancouver over the coming weeks.

The film, which follows best friends Hakeem (Nabil Rajo) and Anthony (Jahmil French) who get entangled with the mob after stealing a car, was made on a $1 million budget, with support from Telefilm Canada and SODEC.

The feature is a first for Bohbot, who has a long history producing documentaries, including 2006’s Once a Nazi…

The producers told Playback Daily that the success of The Lady, on which Bohbot served as an exec producer and Crilly served as co-producer, opened doors for the team at Telefilm to discuss making a feature.

Bohbot added that he was attracted to the project precisely because of the challenges it presented – namely, that it’s an English-language film set in Quebec and a heist action movie made on a relatively low budget.

The film, which is aimed at the 18-24 demographic has been heavily promoted on social media – including Facebook, where the trailer garnered 80,000 views in less than a week. The producers have also screened the film at local university campuses in advance of its theatrical release and participated in a Reddit AMA to drum up interest amongst its key demo.
