Mongrel Media picks up StudioCanal film library

The broadcast and digital rights to a StudioCanal library of 300 film titles has a new Canadian home.

Mongrel Media has picked up the TV, DVD, VOD, SVOD and electronic sell-through rights to a slew of movies including Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II and Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct.

The StudioCanal library was most recently with Entertainment One, and before that was exploited by Alliance Films, Maple Pictures and Lionsgate.

Lionsgate continues to hold the U.S. rights to the film library, which contains classic hits like Renny Harlin’s Cutthroat Island, Oliver Stone’s The Doors, Ted Kotcheff’s First Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone and Adrian Lyne’s Jacob’s Ladder.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“With the addition of over 300 titles from
this collection, we now have over 1500 titles in our catalog and we will continue
to strive to bring the best films from around the world to Canadian audiences,” Hussain Amarshi,
president/founder of Mongrel Media, said in a statement Monday.
