Rainmaker Entertainment partners on Ratchet and Clank film

Vancouver-based animation studio Rainmaker Entertainment has partnered with independent production company Blockade Entertainment to produce Ratchet and Clank, an animated theatrical feature film.

The CG-stereoscopic film is based on the PlayStation video game franchise of the same name published by Sony Computer Entertainment America and developed by game developer Insomniac Games. According to press materials,  the Ratchet and Clank game franchise was launched in 2002 and has sold 26 million copies globally.

Production on the project unveiled Tuesday will primarily take place at Rainmaker’s Vancouver facility, for a release in early 2015. It follows Rainmaker’s Escape from Planet Earth, an animated feature execute produced by Harvey Weinstein. Released earlier this year, it earned $21 million at the North American box office it’s opening weekend.

Ratchet and Clank is being co-financed through an arrangement with Film Financial Services  and includes Rainmaker as the lead investor along with China’s CNHK. Rainmaker and CNHK penned a five-film production pact back in January.

It will be directed by Jericca Cleland and produced by Blockade’s CEO Brad Foxhoven and VP of development David Wohl, with from Rainmaker president Michael Hefferon serving as executive producer and Kim Dent Wilder and Kylie Ellis serving as supervising producer and producer, respectively.

Key talent from the game will also reprise their roles in the film, including James A. Taylor as Ratchet, David Kaye as Clank and Jim Ward as Qwark.

Screenwriter and senior writer for Insomniac Games, TJ Fixman (One Night on the Hudson), penned the screenplay that will maintain the signature dialogue and irreverent humor.

Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy.
