Shaw Media has announced that it has inked a deal with NBCUniversal Television Canada that will bring the one-hour sci-fi series Defiance to Showcase.

The series, from Universal Cable Productions, stars Playback Canadian Film and TV Hall of Famer Graham Greene and fellow Canuck Mia Kirshner.

It takes place in the future on an earth that has been drastically changed by the arrival of seven alien races. Together, the humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully.

The product of a partnership between Syfy and California-based game developer Trion Worlds, the series has embraced the transmedia trend, rolling out a massive multiplayer online game (pictured) to run alongside but also independent of the show.

While the show will follow the drama in Defiance, which is set in the ruins of St. Louis, MO, the game will allow players to pursue adventures in the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area.

The series is exec produced by Michael Taylor and Kevin Murphy, who is also showrunner.

The pilot was directed by Scott Stewart, and Michael Nankin will direct the series.

Defiance also stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran and Jaime Murray.

Production on the show has been underway in Toronto since April, and the series is expected to air on Showcase in spring 2013.
