Super Channel pacts with Starz Media on Magic City
Looking to deepen its programming bench against Canadian pay TV competition, Super Channel has pacted with Starz Media Worldwide Distribution by inking a multi-year licensing and distribution deal for Starz original series Magic City, and a feature film pipeline.
The pay TV service, owned and operated by Edmonton-based Allarco Entertainment since late 2007, is looking with the Starz Media licensing deal to break the hold on the pay TV market from rivals The Movie Network and Movie Central, which are backed by long-standing supply deals with U.S. premium TV players Showtime and HBO.
Super Channel has snapped up the exclusive Canadian pay TV rights for Magic City, a period drama which will premiere in Canada on April 6, coinciding with the U.S. premiere on Starz.
The late-50s mob series, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Grey’s Anatomy), Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) and Danny Huston (The Kingdom) centers on Morgan’s character, who runs the fictional Miramar Playa Hotel on the Miami strip.
The series will air back-to-back with Boss, which the network recently licensed from Lionsgate.
Mitch Glazer is the creator of Magic City, and executive produces along with co-executive producer Ed Bianchi and producer Dwayne Shattuck.
Movie titles covered in the agreement include Beautiful Boy, Happythankyoumoreplease, Kill the Irishman, Meet Monica Velour and Sinners and Saints.
