Screenwriter Kate Melville is making her directorial debut with Picture Day, with Tatiana Maslany and Spencer Van Wyck in the lead roles.
The low-budget indie from Snitch Pictures is now shooting in Toronto.
Picture Day stars Maslany, who won a special jury prize at Sundance for her breakout performance in Grown Up Movie Star (pictured), as a die hard music fan who befriends a nerdy freshman (Van Wyck) and falls in love with an aging rock star, played by Steven McCarthy.
Maslany’s recent credits include The Vow, with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, and a role in Violet And Daisy, which shot in New York City and was written by Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious).
Melville, a veteran story editor on series like Endgame and Being Erica, saw the script for Picture Day take second place in the 2004 Final Draft Screenwriting Competition.
Picture Day is executive produced by Daniel Iron of Foundry Films, and received financing from Telefilm Canada and the pay TV channels The Movie Network and Movie Central.
