CRTC approves three new specialty channels

The CRTC approved three television stations last week, awarding Category 2 licenses for channels devoted to golf, Mandarin-language programming and Christian entertainment.

The application for Canadian Golf network, from J. Thomas Murray, states the channel will offer in-depth analysis and coverage of the professional tours, as well as amateur events. It will also feature instructional programming, player profiles and golf news. Fifty percent of programming will be in HD, and a maximum of 10% per month will be live PGA Tour events. The channel is required to be operational within the next 48 months.

The China Network Corporation – Mandarin specialty service will be devoted to serving Mandarin-speaking communities in Canada with news, sports, variety and financial programming.

The channel requested and received permission to devote up to six of the 12 minutes of hourly advertising to local companies.

According to the approval, the channel will air at least 90% Mandarin-language programming, and the remaining will be in English or French, or both.

The not-for-profit organization, Love World Christian Network, also received approval this week for LoveworldCan, a channel that will air Christian programming, including news and music videos.
