IFC Films has picked up the worldwide rights to Toronto documentarian Barry Avrich’s controversial Harvey Weinstein biopic, Unauthorized, excluding Canada.
IFC Films acquired the documentary about the Miramax Films co-founder as it chronicles Weinstein’s road from concert promoter in Buffalo to the Cannes Film Festival and Oscar glory.
“I believe that great stories must be told. Harvey and Bob Weinstein, without a question, redefined so many rules of Hollywood marketing, distribution and filmmaking that you simply can’t ignore their impact on history,” Avrich said of the film in a statement that accompanied the distribution deal.
Canadian pay TV networks The Movie Network and Movie Central helped bankroll the Avrich documentary.
Harvey Weinstein currently runs The Weinstein Co. with his brother Bob.
IFC Films made two other acquisitions at this week’s Toronto International Film Festival: James Gunn’s Super and Werner Herzog’s 3D Cave of Forgotten Dreams.
